Things I make when nobody asked.
Software used every day, or made just for fun. The first group is what I am working on now. The second is everything you can click, play or watch.
Building now
-
Synapse
A study app for exam revision. Free software under the AGPL.
I write a devlog alongside it: why a CRDT sits at the centre of a study app, how a design system got smaller and more accessible by leaving things out, where AI sped the work up and where it quietly made it harder.
-
cargo-local-registry
A Cargo subcommand that builds a local registry from a lockfile, for building Rust projects on machines without internet access. Started by Alex Crichton in 2016, handed to me in 2021. I keep it working through Cargo's internal API changes, added an
addcommand for single crates, and moved CI and prebuilt binaries to GitHub Actions. Over 300,000 downloads on crates.io.
Interactive and visual
-
Octopus
A sea creature swimming on its own across a canvas, tentacles trailing behind. An experiment from 2012, before requestAnimationFrame was everywhere. Source.
-
Shaders
Fragment shaders on Shadertoy, the kind of thing you write to see what happens.
-
Solitaire
A small Klondike solitaire written to get acquainted with ES6, Redux and React. Source.
-
ReScript game prototype
More of a game engine than a game: quadtrees, steering behaviours, collision detection, all written immutably in ReScript. Abandoned, but a good way to learn the language.
-
Ultradino 2000
An Asteroids remake started for a Ludum Dare jam, theme "delay the inevitable". You are a dinosaur in a jetpack shooting lasers from your eyes at the comet that ends your species. Made with a friend, never finished.
